Join our Youth Peer Facilitator team this Spring 2019!

Do you believe in education as a vehicle for change? So do we! If you are 15-25 years old and live in Metro Vancouver, unceded Coast Salish territories, we invite you to join our pool of youth facilitators.You will be delivering our free, interactive and engaging peer-led popular education workshops on key issues facing our society and planet. Topics include migrant justice and anti-racism, social determinants of health, economic justice – poverty and income inequality, food sovereignty, and more!

Peer Facilitators:

  • In collaboration with a Co-Facilitator, prepare and facilitate scheduled workshops.
  • Participate in mandatory monthly meetings, including additional training and curriculum development.
  • Participate in on-going program assessment and evaluation efforts.
  • Committed participation until October 2019 – with possibility of taking a break over summer months

What you get:

  1. Facilitation training – gain marketable skills that can be applied to a variety of professions, such as teaching, non-profit work, youth work, and others. Learn deeper critical analysis of issues and grow your facilitation and community organizing skills.
  2. Ongoing support and mentorship – facilitators work within a team of like-minded peers, set learning objectives, apply feedback from workshop participants, and receive ongoing mentorship from experienced staff.
  3. Unique experience delivering CYH workshops in school and community settings that educate, activate and empower youth to build a better world.
  4. Honorarium for each workshop facilitated ($25), in addition to bus tickets for travel.
  5. Other change-making opportunities like writing blog posts, organizing events, supporting community actions, and others.
  6. Networking with other organizations, social justice groups and campaigns.
  7. Certificate of completion upon the end of the committed term.
  8. Reference letters for the work you’ve done with us, upon request.

We are looking for youth who:

  • Are from diverse backgrounds and experiences and are between 15 and 25 years old
  • Have experience and/or a desire to work with youth aged 13-22
  • Have a passion for social, economic, and environmental justice and peer-led education
  • Enjoy working in a team and have a sense of humor
  • Have excellent organizational and time-management skills, and accountability
  • Have strong public presentation skills
  • Have availability during school hours (9am-3pm, Mon-Fri) for at least 8 hours/month on at least 2 days a week (actual hours will vary from month to month) / Commitment to facilitating 1-2 workshops each month until the end of October 2019.
  • Are able to attend a MANDATORY two days of training on Sunday, February 24, (10am – 4pm) and Sunday, March 3 (10am – 4pm) *see more information below
  • Will regularly attend monthly evening meetings
  • Are willing to complete a criminal record check
  • Are able to travel within Lower Mainland (transit tickets will be provided)

Important Dates:

  • February 4th (Monday), 2019 at 11:59 PM  – Deadline for application
  • February 12th (Tuesday), 6 – 8 pm – Mandatory Facilitator Group Interview – A chance to make sure we’re a good fit
  • February 24 (Sunday), 10am – 4pm – Training Day 1 – Anti-Oppression and Facilitation Basics – This training covers popular education techniques, anti-oppression in classroom settings, holding safe space, collaborating with co-facilitators, and more. This session is mandatory if you don’t have prior facilitation training covering similar topics.
  • March 3 (Sunday), 10am – 4pm – Training Day 2 – MANDATORY – Check Your Head Approach and Workshop Training – This training covers Check Your Head’s guiding principles and how we facilitate our workshops. This session is mandatory for all facilitators.

All events take place at the Broadway Youth Resource Centre (2455 Fraser Street, Vancouver, the traditional Coast Salish Territory of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish First Nations).
